  NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2008
Minnesota PGA Golf Partners
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
August 2008

Dear PGA Professionals of North & South Dakota and Minnesota,

I cannot believe that it is the middle of August already and the Section Professional Championship is just around the corner. The 36-hole event will include a Pro-Pro the day before on Tuesday, August 26th, so make sure to find a partner for your practice round and play. Thanks to all who have signed up for the event and the best of luck to you. Also, many thanks in advance to David Nordeen and Brian Jones at Somerby Golf Club for hosting this year’s event, I also want to thank the Tournament Committee for all they do in providing our Section Professionals with opportunities to play in so many wonderful events.

Later this summer, the main national program, Patriot Golf Day will be taking place. This great program takes place Labor Day Weekend, August 29th – September 1st. Make sure that your facility is registered to support this cause. Register your Facility. All funds raised will benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation to provide educational scholarships to families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty. These people, day in and day out, give their lives for the freedom we have here in America. Many heart-felt thanks from the Minnesota Section PGA Professionals to our military throughout the world.

How about that Special Olympics Pro-Am and all the talented special athletes!!!!! For the second year in a row I was blessed with the opportunity to play nine holes with Katie (TIGGER) Timmer. What a way to spend the day! A big thanks to Chris Nelson and Bill Fish of Special Olympics Minnesota for all they do on behalf of the special athletes. Our Section is very fortunate to have a relationship with such a great charity organization and to have the support of Wells Fargo, TN Marketing, Nike, Orlimar, Etonic, and Chippewa Water. Thank you to all who helped with the event, especially Lori Money and Jay Meyerhoff and our wonderful Minnesota PGA staff. Thanks also to the staff at Bunker Hill Golf Course and Dick Tollette for the years of support for the Minnesota State Open and fundraisers like this one for Special Olympic Minnesota.

We should all be proud of our Minnesota State Open Championships. Congratulations to our 2008 Champions; Amateur Yu Katayama in the Open, Michael Zinni in the Senior Open, and Professional Angie Olberholser in the Women’s Open.

It was great seeing all the participants and rules volunteers at Bunker Hills Golf Club for the Minnesota State Open and at the Women's State Open at Stonebrooke Golf Club. The field in this year’s Women’s Open increased from 2007 and continues to grow each year. Also, each year the girls playing in that event get younger and younger, or am I just getting older and older. I know the answer to that one but it is great to see the nice increase to the field. Thanks to Laura Olin with LIJA sportswear for the belts given to each participant. And let’s not forget the staff at Stonebrooke and their Head Professional Barrett Boe and General Manager Einar Odland thank you so much for hosting this year’s event. We are always looking for a company to sponsor the Women State Open, so spread the word and maybe we can get one by next summer.

Congratulations to our 2008 McGladrey Team Championship Champions from Moorhead Country Club after winning the Sectional Championship at Troy Burne Golf Club. Best of luck to PGA Professional Chris Larson and amateurs Kris Friesen, Chad Mohagen and Jason Spitzner at the National Championship at Pinehurst Resort on October 20-22. Also special thanks to our event sponsor RSM McGladrey for their support of the event.

Our Minnesota Junior Golf Program ROCKS, because of Bob Bush and Karla Bredlow and all who intern with the Section. Time and time again I hear how much the parents love our program and how professionally it is run. Our program would not be near the success it is without all the great courses that are available for the children statewide to play. Thank you to all the PGA Head Professionals, General Managers and owners that donate their facility to make our junior program one of the best in the nation. Bob Bush has sent out information to see who will offer their facility for a few fall events, let Bob know if you can help.

If you would like to nominate a fellow professional for one of the Section Awards, all the information is on the member’s side of our website. It is an easy process to complete and I know that Jeff Drimel and his Committee have spent many hours on the revamping of the process, please don't wait till the deadline, nominate someone today.

It has been a beautiful summer and hopefully will be a fabulous fall. Please continue to keep Larry Nelson and his family in your prayers and thoughts.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our Section Championship and before you know it, the Fall Meeting, which will be held at Medina Golf & Country Club on Monday, October 27th.
